Hurricane Gil weakened into a tropical storm in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Saturday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. It was not forecast to threaten land. The Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm’s maximum sustained winds dropped to 65 mph.

Forecasters say a disturbance in the Atlantic has a 40-percent chance of cyclone formation over the next week.

MEXICO CITY -- Hurricane Gil was continuing to churn in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Saturday but is not expected to threaten land and is likely to decrease in strength rapidly over the weekend, forecasters said.
