The 57-year-old man was surfing with friends in the Pacific waters off northern Sydney when the attack happened.

The surfer, who had a wife and young daughter, lost "a number of limbs" and his surfboard was broken in two, police said.

The male victim was pulled from the water by other surfers, but had lost too much blood and died at the scene, said Police Superintendent John Duncan.

The attack marked the fourth fatality of its kind in the country in 2025, according to the Australian Shark-Incident Database.
