Judge orders temporary halt to construction at Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ detention center
A federal judge on Thursday ordered a two-week halt to construction at an immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” as she considers whether it violates environmental laws.
Members of the Miccosukee Tribe are celebrating after a judge temporarily blocked further construction at the Alligator Alcatraz facility upstream from their reservation.
The state will still be allowed to operate the so-called "Alligator Alcatraz" detention camp but is barred from making any further improvements for now.
