Gil is the seventh named storm to form in the Eastern Pacific in 2025. Storms that form in the Atlantic or the Pacific generally move west, meaning Atlantic storms pose a greater threat to North America. If a storm forms in the Pacific close to land, it can bring damaging winds and rain before pushing out to sea.

Tropical Storm Henriette continues to churn across the eastern Pacific Ocean this week and is forecast to bring tropical moisture and significant waves as it passes northeast of the Hawaiian Islands.

Tropical Storm Gil strengthened to become a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean before weakening again, according to the National Hurricane Center.
