Thailand’s top court ordered the influential former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to prison for one year Tuesday in a dramatic turn of events for the embattled political titan.

The Supreme Court said Thaksin’s detention in a VIP wing of a hospital in lieu of prison was unlawful in another blow for his politically powerful family.

Thaksin built one of Thailand’s most powerful political dynasties before being ousted in a 2006 coup. He spent 15 years in self-imposed exile before returning home in 2023 to serve a reduced corruption sentence after his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was elected prime minister.
