Taiwan’s last major earthquake was in 1999, when a magnitude 7.6 temblor struck about 90 miles southwest of Taipei, killing nearly 2,500 people.

Taiwan is no stranger to powerful earthquakes, yet their toll on the high-tech island's 23 million residents has been relatively contained thanks to its excellent earthquake preparedness, experts say.

Hsu said water and electricity supplies were in the process of being restored. Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency said the quake was 7.2 magnitude while the U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.4.

China, which makes disputed claims of ownership over Taiwan, thanked the global community for expressions of grief after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the island.
