The transfer follows news that President Trump ordered the Pentagon to begin using military force against certain Latin American drug cartels.

Two leaders of the violent Zetas cartel, notorious for carrying out massacres in Mexico, were also extradited in February, the government said. Jose Angel Canobbio, the recently captured alleged security chief of the Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa cartel, was also one of the prisoners sent to the U.S. in February.

Mexico’s president says U.S. military strikes against Mexican cartels would be an “invasion” and that it’s “off the table,” but Mexico may not be able to stop the U.S. should it choose to strike the growing criminal groups.
