Orlando officials on Thursday condemned the state’s overnight removal of a rainbow crosswalk outside the Pulse nightclub – a commemoration of the 49 people killed at the LGBTQ-friendly nightclub in 2016.

The crosswalk was installed as part of a memorial honoring the victims of the June 2016 shooting, when a gunman opened fire at the LGBTQ club, killing 49 people and injuring more than 50.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said the repainting of the crosswalk near the site of the Pulse mass shooting was done "without any supporting safety data or discussion."

A rainbow crosswalk honoring the 49 victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub massacre was removed overnight on Wednesday, following a new directive from President Donald Trump ’s administration. The crosswalk is on Orange Avenue in Orlando, Florida, right next to the abandoned club that still stands as a memorial to the lives lost.

The Pulse Memorial rainbow crosswalk honoring the 49 lives lost in the 2016 nightclub shooting has been removed and painted over by the state, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer says.

Local leaders, residents outraged as removal comes after directive from DeSantis and Trump to wipe crosswalks and sidewalks with “social, political or ideological messages.”

The mayor of Orlando, Fla., said that the crosswalk mural, which featured the Pride flag’s colors, was removed overnight this week. Community members protested and have, for now, repainted it.
