Air quality in New York City continues to pose health risks for the community, as elevated ozone pollution has prompted officials to declare an air quality alert for Sunday. The advisory will remain in effect from 11 a.

Another air quality alert is in effect Tuesday for NYC, western Long Island, the Hudson Valley, northwest New Jersey and southwest Connecticut.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City will be under an air quality health advisory on Sunday for ozone, as issued by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Amanda Lefton and State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald.

Hazy skies descend over the New York City area again on Tuesday, re-upping some air quality alerts related to Canadian wildfire smoke. As of 10 a.m., the air quality index was 121, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The worst air quality in recent years occurred in June 2023, when the smoke became so thick it created an orange haze over the city. However, the subpar air quality has returned to the city in each of the past two summers as well, including multiple times this year.

An air quality health advisory is in place until midnight due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter, city officials said.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says air quality will reach the red level, meaning it is unhealthy for everyone, in all northern and central parts of the state on Sunday morning, while the southern part of the state will be in the orange level.
